Why Your Marketing Feels Off (And How Human Design Creates Aligned Marketing That Works)

Early in my solo-entrepreneurial journey, I was doing what most people do, reading marketing and business books, looking for strategies, and trying to figure out the right way to market myself and get clients.

Somewhere along the way, I discovered Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port.

And there was this one idea that I’ve never forgotten. ‘When you’re fully self-expressed, you likely love marketing.’

I’ve never forgotten that idea.

But if that’s true…
why does so much marketing feel like the exact opposite for so many people?

Why does it feel forced, uncomfortable, and awkward? It's like we're trying to do something that just doesn't fit with us.

That question stayed with me.

And over the years—through my own journey, and through working with clients—it’s become clear:

Most marketing doesn’t feel off because you’re doing it wrong.

It feels off because it’s not in alignment with you.

The Problem: We’ve Been Taught to Market Like Everyone Else

Look around, and you’ll see it.

The same messaging, formulas,  and frameworks. The same “hooks” and content structures repeated over and over again. And yes, they work within an appropriate context.

But, the problem I see is everyone is gathered at the same waterhole… watching each other… copying what ‘seems’ to work.

So, from a neuroscience perspective, this makes sense. Your nervous system is wired for safety. For belonging. For pattern recognition.

So when you see something working for someone else, your brain says:
Do that. That’s safe.

This isn’t a flaw. It’s biology.

But in marketing your business?

It creates a kind of quiet disconnection.

Because the more you try to follow what works for someone else
the further you move away from what’s true for you.

The Shift: From Homogenization to Individualization

Every meaningful shift—personally or collectively—requires us to question what we’ve been taught to accept as “normal.”

At one point in history, it was widely accepted that everything revolved around the Earth.

Until Nicolaus Copernicus observed something different—and knew it to be true..

That shift didn’t just change astronomy.
It changed how we understand our place in the world.

And in a much quieter, but equally important way, we’re in a similar moment in human evolution.

We’re moving away from the old way—the one-size-fits-all, follow-the-formula approach—because it can only take you so far. At this point in our history, we need to move beyond that now.

Where Human Design Comes In

This is where Human Design becomes incredibly powerful.

At its core, Human Design is a system that helps you understand how you’re uniquely wired.

Not in an abstract way—but in a deeply practical way.

It shows you:

  • How you’re designed to make decisions

  • How your energy naturally works

  • Your gifts, strengths and talents¾the way you’re truly meant to express yourself

And most importantly—it gives you a way to trust that.

Instead of trying to figure everything out from your mind…
you begin to move into something deeper.

Two of the simplest and most impactful pieces are:

Strategy — how you’re designed to engage with opportunities
Authority — how you’re designed to make decisions

When you start experimenting with these, something shifts.

You stop forcing.

You start responding, initiating, expressing—in a way that actually feels natural.

The Real Issue Isn’t Strategy—It’s Self-Awareness

If we’re being honest, most marketing struggles aren’t really about marketing.

They’re about self-awareness.

It shows up as:

  • Over-consuming on everyone’s advice

  • Not knowing the right actions to take that is in alignment with your energetics

  • Falling into the trap of bright shiny objects

We’ve been conditioned to look outside of ourselves for answers.

To believe that someone else knows better.
That there’s a “right way” we just haven’t found yet.

But the more you look outside…
the less you’re able to trust yourself.

And eventually, you lose your sense of what actually feels right for you.

Marketing as Self-Expression

This is why I keep coming back to this idea from Michael Port.

Not because it’s philosophical. But because it’s practical.

If your business is an extension of you…
then your marketing isn’t something separate from that.

Not performance.
Not perfection.
Not trying to sound like someone else.

It’s pure, unadulterated expression.

The kind that comes from knowing who you truly are…
and allowing that to be seen.

And here’s what I’ve noticed:

When your marketing feels good, you are in a natural alignment.

What Aligned Marketing Actually Feels Like

When you begin to work this way, things don’t just “click” overnight.

But they do start to shift.

You stop chasing every new strategy.
You start communicating in a way that feels natural to you.
You attract people who resonate with your message.

There’s less pressure.
More clarity.
More consistency—without forcing it.

Because you’re no longer guessing.

My Invitation

If you’ve been feeling like your marketing isn’t quite landing…
If you’ve been doing all the “right” things, but something still feels off…

It’s not that you’re doing it wrong.

It may just not be right for you.

There is another way to build your business.

One that’s rooted in discovering your true self.

If this resonates, I invite you to book a session with me. (link)

We’ll explore your design, how you’re naturally wired to show up, and what aligned marketing could look like for you.

Because your business was never meant to look like everyone else’s.

It was meant to be a self-expression of you.
